Crude oil futures advanced to a two-week high as the shrinking size of U.S. crude production gains and a falling dollar outweighed rising supply.

U.S. crude production rose 3,000 barrels a day to 9.42 million in the seven days ended March 20, the Energy Information Administration said. The smallest increase since January left output at the highest level in more than three decades. Prices retreated initially as the report showed that crude supplies increased 8.17 million barrels to 466.7 million last week, the most in records compiled since August 1982.

U.S. stocks fell, after a rally Wednesday on the Federal Reserve’s policy statement, as banks retreated and energy companies fell with the price of oil.

Transocean Ltd. and Chesapeake Energy Corp. dropped more than 5 percent to pace declines in energy stocks after the group posted their best gain in a month yesterday. Citigroup Inc. and Morgan Stanley fell more than 2.3 percent. The Nasdaq Biotechnology Index rose 1.7 percent to a record. Apple Inc. slipped in its first day in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

U.S. stocks fluctuated, after the biggest equities selloff in more than two months amid the surging dollar, as declines in consumer companies offset banks’ rebound.

Tyson Foods Inc. and Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. fell more than 4.5 percent amid reports of suspected bird flu in Arkansas. Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp. added at least 1.6 percent after financial stocks in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index Tuesday had their steepest decline since April. Intel rallied the most since November after its biggest drop in more than a month.

Bets that oil prices will plunge below $35 a barrel by June have lost almost 80 percent of their value after the U.S. benchmark recovered from a six-year low.

June $30 and $35 puts, or wagers that West Texas Intermediate oil will drop below those levels, have tumbled since January. Prices traded within an $8 range last month, the least since September.

Signs of bigger supplies sent sugar and coffee prices tumbling as rains improve harvest prospects in Brazil, the world’s top grower and exporter of both crops.

Sugar futures dropped to the lowest since May 2010 on Tuesday, and coffee plunged more than 6 percent to post the biggest loss in more than four years. Showers across most of Brazil’s growing regions last month helped replenish soil parched by dry weather in January. The brighter production outlook comes as India is poised to export more sugar and farmers gather larger coffee crops in Latin America.
